I suuport the Brisbane Strikers and the Melbourne Knights. I support the Brisbane Strikers because i like them in every sport, and I support the Knights because I live in Melbourne. Who does everyone else Support?

Wollongong Wolves.
Good result for Brisbane on the weekend. Suprising that two of the title favorites: Perth and Newcastle both went down. Maybe the league will be closer than everyone first thought.
Going off topic a bit but what does evryone think about the new finals format?

I guess I support Parra. Being tempted to support the Spirit by friends lately...

Yeah, It was a Great Result for the Strikers beating Glory in Perth which is the hardest Trip in Australia. I wish the NSL was more popular in Australia, I wish it was as popular as Rugby Cricket etc etc. I think the new Finals format is Pretty good, What about you?

i were norm going for the 2 melb clubs but they lost my 2 fav players, boutsianis and porter. prob south. the finals format is stupid anless we have a cup comp like the FA cup.

Where is Boutsianis playing? I know there was some problem with the Kingz but I lost track. He is one of the best players in the NSL and almost singlehandedly dragged South Melbourne into the finals a few years ago.
The one good thing about the new finals series is that the number of fixtures for the season increases which was a major weakness of the league. 3 or 4 extra home games means another 12-16 thousand through the gates covering costs for the season. An FA cup competition would be okay but Asian Champions League would be awesome.

boutisanis moved fomr the kings to sth melb mid season last year but is just a pain and isn't signed for anyone else. i would love to see our teams in the ACL. but that would mean extra matches for the good teams. a team that finishes 7th will play 2 or so weeks. then not play for the next 30 weeks! not known in other leagues!
i think a say SA CUP or somethin would be great as it would create rivalries between teams from local competition and it would show if teams like the brisbane lions( the soccer team who want in the nsl) could hold big crowds and big games.

hey there fellow Aussies
I'm a regular at this board but i never come to this forum, strange ey? Well i'm a Parra supporter, used to like Sydney United but when the whole team including David Mitchell defected so did i, also coz i'm a passionate Eels man :)
Now what is this new finals format you are talking about? I havnt heard anything about it. Would someone care to explain please

Boutsianis if he knuckled down and stayed out of trouble (wasn't he involved in a armed robbery or something) could challenge Emerton for the Australian RW job.
I am still not convinced by an SA cup comp. Australian soccer is not a deep as European comps where the format is already dying. It could give a chance for Brisbane Lions etc to make a big push for admittance for the league but I fear it would be seen as a minor event by the clubs and the fans (if only 3-4 000 turn up to league matches would they show up to watch NSL teams slaughter state league outfits?). By rewarding the good teams, the ACL will increase the level of play and interest in the league as did the world club champioship. It would also hopefully keep some of Australia's playing talent here which further increases the quality of the league. It could also attract imports like Ishida at the Sharks who is one of the best players to watch in the league. I don't think a cup comp will do the same. I would love to be proved wrong though.
The new finals format as I vaguely understand it is that at the end of the season the top six teams form a mini league and play eachother. The top teams start with some points on a staggered start so it doesn't penalise the minor premiers too much. I am not sur if it ends with a grand final or not but I think it does.

well that sounds like it sux...
we don't need a finals series at all...
We should have a nationa league with state leagues, whose winners at the end of the season compete for promotion to the NSL while crappy teams get demoted. That way you have battles at the top and the bottom of the table. I am sure it would make it much more interesting. I think you would agree that it would suck if we have what the NRL has, and that is that same teams (usually Souths, Cowboys and Panthers) always make up the bottom 3... screw the teams you build your goal difference on!!!

the biggest worry about the finals series is the amount of time the bottom clubs have off. even if we have a relegation battle between the bottom six clubs and 2 teams that could handle the nsl so that you got an extra 7 or 14 matches for the teams that dont get into the finals.
the main reason i would like the SA cup (or something like it) is because it would solve 2 problems. 1 we could have a 1st past th post season. because all the big leagues have it and 2, because Australian sport always love Grand finals you could get the big even there.
another suggestion off the point that would help the nsl be seen as more exciting to non soccer fans! the main reason you hear people bagging soccer is because " you could sit their for 90 mins and end up with no scores or no winner!" well i reackon if we did what the argentina league did which is make a penalty shootout after each draw it might get more fans their and present a higher excitement level> i know this is weird but we need to do something to get people interested.

There should a league and a cup. IMO there should be 2 Divisions. I'm tired of seeing teams at the bottom having such little significance. Relegation and promotion is something every sucessful league has. Relegation provides interest for the fans of the bottom clubs and increases competitiveness. These days its usually the top 6 teams meet the lower teams and the results are already clear since the bottom clubs don't even bother trying. With 2 Divisions some clubs will fight tooth and nail in every match. This also adds to the history of the clubs, some clubs may never get relegated or hasn't in yonks and some its a tradition or something. It gives clubs character and this generates interest in fans. Who doesn't like to support the little club who keeps staying up? The l'il battler and all.
And also a cup would be interesting. This can be the end of season showpiece and if there was two divisions it'd also allow the smaller clubs to have a cup run which always generates publicity. It'd also mean that the league itself wouldn't need a finals system to produce a grand final to appease the fans.

seeing as i support the raiders i sorta have a soft spot for any other team from canberra. but the cosmos are gone so it's no one :o
how can the NSL not have a team from the nations capital ?

The problem I have with a two tier league is that the current system can barely support the ten clubs in the competition. If crowds of three and four thousand are the best top league sides can rely on what could a second division crowd look like? Also it would scare of sponsors who could end up investmenting in a second division team. It is also difficult enough to keep players in Australia as it is. Many could be discouraged for signing for a club if they risked playing second division.
A multi level league is certainly the ideal but I don't think we can support it yet.
Canberra should certainly have a team in the NSL. Their cricket team was a joke because they didn't play Sheffield Shield and therefore couldn't attract any good players. The Raiders and Brumbies get good support and the AFL team the Kangaroos were looking at Canberra as a possible home weren't they?

We could get some of the NSW premier league teams or something. More teams means more potential for fans I s'pose. On the other hand it could mean more spread of fans on more teams making the average crowds smaller...... still I think it's a good idea to look into.

I think there's a Newcastle United in the NSL? If so , I'll support them, even though I know nothing about them:D
Btw, which team is the one full of Greek-Aussies and Yugoslav-Aussies. Can only people of those nationalities join those teams?

South Melbourne is a Greek team. It's support base is the large Greek community and many of it's players are greeks must not exclusively. Olympic Sharks used to be the same but they are now trying to get rid of that image by associating themselves with the Sutherland region.
Two teams have a croatian support base: Sydney Utd and Melbourne Knights. They are in the same situation as South Melbourne.
It is not healthy situation but it is not really without precedent. In Scotland the two big teams are divided along religious lines and many other leagues have other political and social lines. The problem is that these communities don't make up the majority of Australian society unlike in Scotland where the vast majority are either catholic or protestant.
It is worth looking into the two tier structure but many NSW premier league teams are in Sydney and support for most Sydney teams hardly justifies others being added yet. It may draw more support but teams like Parramatta haven't really demonstrated this is a fact.

the people in canberra will only support a winning team. the cosmos and comets both suck and that's why they only averaged 130 people to their home games. the brumbies only get heaps of support now because they won the super 12 a while back and always feature in the final series. the raiders were one of the most successful sides late 80's to mid 90's but now they're going through a rough patch and that has seen crowds decrease.
so unless you're wanting to buy pornography (looney is a regular at harry's hardcore XXX videos btw) or fireworks there's really nothing else to do in canberra besides jump on the bandwagon of whichever team is winning at the moment.

My allegence is with South Australia, family & all that. So i did follow Adelaide City Force, but i have since found out that they are no longer in the NSL. Can anyone please tell what has happened to them & why. I have tried to find out on the net but can't find much info on it.
All i know is that they have been replaced by Adelaide United & they have taken some of City's players. Are United a newly formed side or have they been around for some time. And do City no longer exist, it confuses me a bit a i noticed that United got 15,000 at the Hindmarsh Stadium for there first NSL home match, so if City have gone out of business how comes they never got crowds of that size....?
Can someone let me know what has happened to City & who are United...?

ok well, the story is basically........adelaide city went broke......the club dont exist anymore, and the NSL put together the Adelaide United team, which are new, were made up from scratch. They aimed to reach the whole of south australia with this team, they were hoping to gain huge support from the whole state, etc. so far so good for them, all their home crowds have been around 13,000-15,000, they have a few of the adeliade city players, the rest were made up of state league players in south australia. As for adelaide city not getting crowds, i guess its just because their supporter base was dying down......whereas now, the adelaide united team is more a club for everyone, no particular fan base eg. Italian, so the whole state gets behind them i guess....

I know closing it may be too harsh but its best that we put NSL in the past and focus on the A-League.
If you have any thoughts or comments put it on the A-League marked threads. This way everything is tidy and there is no confusion etc. Thankyou.
