Hey Guys,
India have made great progress in football recently. They almost qualified for the 2nd round of the WC qualifiers and one of their clubs Mohun Bagan is doing really well in the AFC Champions League. I can bet that India will qualify for the World Cup in 2006.

The best Indian player is Baichung Bhutia. He became the first Asian player to play professional football in England in 1998. He played for three season at Bury FC. Currently he plays at the best football club of India at Mohun Bagan.

India??? hmmm.... I think they have a long way to go until they make the WC, and I think Azerbaijan would make the WC before them :D

P.S. I havent heard any Indian footballers, all I know is there are some few Pakis and Bengalis in London that are preety good ;)

Azerbaiyan maybe better than India right.. but India have more chances of reaching the Wc.. they were closer than Azerbaiyan on the WC qualifiers of 2002....and the problem is that UEFA is much more harder than AFC...

why doesnt Azerbaiyan go to AFC?

That might be true, but Azerbaijan got 5 points in thier group which if put on AFC it would been the best group. I dont think India could have got 5 points in our group or beat Slovakia 2-0 but Azerbaijan would have gone really far if they played in India's group.

Azerbaijan doesnt wanna go to AFC because there is not competition to play against and we get to learn the european game, and give our players better chances to play abroad.

True, but "the easy out isn't always the best way out"

We would be considered a better team if we got thru in UEFA hen we would have in AFC.... for example, Saudi Arabia did well in AFC but when they go to the WC they stunk up the joint becasue of the transtition since they werent playing easy asian teams but were playing european and african teams.

BTW, In Uefa, whenever teams go to competions (Uefa, CL, etc) they receive more money than they would in Asia for participation. ;)

yes but if Azerbaiyan stay in uefa they will need allot of time to qualify for a WC...

in AFC will be easier...

The Indian club Mohun Bagan has qualified for the 3rd Qualifying Round of the AFC Champions League. Now they are going to face a top Korean side. WoW!!! This shows that Indian football is constantly on the rise. The first leg is on 16th November. I can't wait!!!

I saw a TV programe recently about Indian football. Is there really Brazilian players in the Indian league?

There are some really good Brazilian players in the Indian league. The most notable among them are Baretto and Gilmar. The latter comes from a second division club in Italy and is said to be Lucio's best friend.

i think we indians should improve in the tecnical aspects of the game before thinking of making it to the world cup.good technique and passion makes the game beautiful to watch.getting an entry to the world cup without good technique and passion will spoil the beauty of the game.so lets focus on the world cup only after making improvements in the game.

Guys...nice to think abt India playing in the world cup....but realistically...we are a good 20 years behind say a top Asian team like Japan....we have to understand the efforts Japanese put in their grass root soccer to achieve this kind of success......India really can't imagine that kind of investment in soccer.......and abt foreigners playing in Indian league most come from African countries.....and all these guys hardly even play second div in their own countries........and Brazilian Baretto doesn't come come from Italian Serie B......he might have gone on a trial....but really he is a Vasco B team reject.................just to think that he is the top player in India gives an idea about the quality of Indian soccer..............it is easy to understand why....less than 3 percent of population play soccer seriously...........the crap people at the top of Indian soccer are doing nothing to even encourage soccer at school level................pathetic.

Indian soccer is rising. Thanks to the conquest of East Bengal Soccer Club, who seem to be thrashing clubs in Asian Cup( They have even thrashed BEC from Thailand).

Yea, they are a decent team. And the Indian team isn't as bad you non-indians make it out to be. They beat Singapore, ranked 108, and India is ranked like 140. WC2006: doubt it, but maybe in 2010 they'll surprise us...
