Altough its not that much in the news anymore, I`m sure that behind closed doors managers from teams like PSV and Ajax could be talking about it.

I`m just curious what you guys think of this idea. You all heard of it so what do you think?

Which countries should be part of it?
Which teams?
Do you guys think it will help big teams in smaller leagues to be competitive again with the topteams in european competitions?
What will happen or should happen with the teams remaining in the leagues without the bigger teams?
And finally, do you guys think it is inevitable or do you think it will never happen?
Is it still needed now that the big teams can`t throw money around anymore?

BTW: You can also answer just a few questions. :)

This question is for everybody, but especcialy for fans of the Dutch league. Do we really need to be involved in a Transatlantic league? Is playing against Brondby so much better than playing against Vitesse or Utrecht?

This whole Transatlantic League idea is bad. What's the point when theres the Uefa Cup and the CL? Besides, it's like you said, do we really want to see Brondy instead of Vitesse or Utrecht? I don't.

Well I think you are right, but I think there are also people who might think differently.

Lets just say that for example the best teams from Belgium, Scotland, Scandinavia, and maybe (a big maybe) Portugal will join the league.

Then the league can look this way:
Ajax - Feyenoord - PSV - Celtic - Rangers - Benfica - SP Lissabon Porto - Anderlecht - Rosenborg - Brondby - Helsingborg - RC Genk - Club Brugge
Maybe extra spots for Vitesse (I think they would deserve to be there) and Utrecht.
That doesn`t look to bad. And I once heard that in the English leagues there are also teams who actually shouldn`t be there.
Cardiff ???

A better league can help getting better players to the involved clubs. Also it could persuade players to stay longer.
I think its terrible that players who join Ajax are already talking about a big transfer to a big league. Its not just Ajax to.
I know you can`t stop it and that time changes.

Most players don`t know hat loyalty to your team is and are obsessed with money. I can understand that you want to play on the highest level you can, but why can`t they first repay the time and effort of their current teams who prepared them for the big leagues. A lot of players just want to cash in as much as possible, just like some teams. Transfers are the reasons why teams like Ajax can survive, but at least have the desency to stay for a few years for your club, teammates and most of all for the supporters.
The last part should probably have been posted on the anger forum. :)

It just makes me think about the good ol days when Dutch soccer was feared everywhere in Europe.
I know Feyenoord have won the UEFA Cup, but only because they couldn`t pass the first groupstage of the CL. This doesn`t mean that winning the Uefa Cup isn`t a good accomplishment.
Inter didn`t seem to care, but you still have to beat them ofcourse.

Sorry for the long post.

Damnit, quit apologizing for the long posts!!! You're a good poster and that's what counts.

You make some good points, but the whole Atlantic league is still a bad idea. Before I respond further though, would it be an actual league setup with relegation where the clubs wouldn't play in their traditional leagues (for example if Ajax plays in the Atlantic league it doesn't play in the Eredivisie) or would it be more of a tournament where they still play in their domestic leagues?

No they wouldn`t play in the domestic league anymore.
Rlegetion/promotion would be tough to realise.
First of all the clubs would have to relegate to their own former domestic leagues,.
Not impossible maybe if you let the league winners of Scotland and Holland (and the rest) compete for one or to spots in the Transatlantic League.

What could happen though is that a lot of clubs from one country promote and other teams from other teams relegate.

Also possible to split all teams and make sepperate divisions, like the Serie A, B, C. But I don`t know if the smaller teams would be intererested. For a lot of the poorer teams travel costs could become to high.

No relegation should be the easiest option, but not really the way it should be. It will give teams the certainty of a steady income, but the league will lose on the departement of excitement.

It will be tough but there always is a solution.

The Solution is Simple!

If you split any proposed league into two, then the bottom four teams of league B (or 2) would play the champions of their national league to see who has the right to play in the Atlantic league. The winner would either remain or enter (A)tlantic (L)eague Division 2.

If two teams from the same nation were in the bottom four places of A.L.2 , then the lowest placed team would contest for the right to remain in the league with the domestic national champions.

Basically, what I am saying is that each nation would have to have a specified number of teams in the Atlantic league. Thus, promotion and relegation from or into A.L.2 could only occur between clubs from the same nation.

If you are not in the bottom four places of A.L.2 then you cannot be relegated. Equally, if a club from say Holland was not in the bottom four places of Atlantic League Division 2, then the domestic national champions of the Netherlands could not be promoted.

A situation like this would have to exist for the first few years to ensure that clubs from the smaller nations could improve and not fear relegation every year. Once clubs had become more equal then a different promotion/relegation situation could be developed.

Sounds like a good idea there, and btw, welcome, hope to more of u. But as you might now, Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord regularly stumble against the smaller teams, at the moment, I see that neither 3 would be consistent enough to compete in a league thats higher up.

I see smaller league teams complaining a lot...

Could you emphasize that a little bit :)
