Any ideas on who to get for defence for next season? Maldini can't do it all alone. I'm pretty sure Billy has said he will retire after this season ends and we don't have a quality third defender.
For one, I say we bring up Smoje from Monza. He has been developing excellently there and I think he is ready for Serie A. His player ratings are almost always around 7 or 7.5 and he is a big strong defender. He's also a regular on the Croatian U21 defence, and they have a very good defence.
Now, along with him we need to get some experienced players. I know Thuram was among the players rumoured to be coming, but I don't think that's going to happen, since he has signed a contract extension. Nesta could be a possibility. If Lazio is to sign Rivaldo, or another big money player which they will surely do, they'll have to finance the deal somehow. I do remember Cragnotti saying that nobody will spend their entire career at Lazio. This means even the "untouchable" Nesta could become available. I would also go after Cannavaro, he's already an excellent talent and would fit in well here.
I think another good player to go after would be Rio Ferdinand of West Ham. This guy is really impressive and will become of the best around IMHO.
Nesta and Cannavaro will be expensive, especially Nesta, but we can afford one of them. Rio Ferdinand won't be that expensive and we already own Smoje.
I think these players would make our defence much better, and take a lot of the load off of Maldini.
