Harry Kewel Aussie Captain?

Why is Farina picking this muppet as captain? He rarely plays for your national team cuz of his so called 'injuries' (sometimes debatable) and seems too uncommitted to the Socceroos from what I've seen. Someone like Emerton would be a better choice, and would command more respect

I agree. Kewell has seemed uncommitted to the national team and I don't think he would be a worthy captain. I was disappointed that Okon as captain did not play in Oceania Championships and Kewell with his involvement restricted to "serious matches" (like Leeds vs Colo Colo) is not the sort of player who will lead by example and encourage players to play for their country and not match bonuses. At this point the player most deserving is Chipperfield who was willing to come back and play. Skoko is most likely though as it looks like the national team will be overhauled over the next few years and he will be one of the few experienced faces left. Bresciano is another player who could blossom before next WC qualifiers.

I reckon Vidmar, Lazaridis or Aloisi should be captain, they're almost always here (can't really blame them for the Oceania Cup IMO, the way SA was acting there was no respect for players) and always give their best for the Socceroos.

I thought of Vidmar too but he isn't any younger than Okon. Will he be around by next WC? I am not too sure about Alosi and Lazaridis's ages but they should be considered if they are still going to be playing by the next WC. I think the national team by next WC will be vastly different to this one. Who do you think will be playing?

Why did overseas players not play in the Oceania Cup? It was in the holidays so there was no clash with club matches. They may not have been getting what they are used to being payed but SA is broke. Those players who did play have salaries much smaller to those of our big name foreign stars yet they could afford the time to play for their country. I think it is insulting to NSL players when foreign players think a match representing Ausrtalia is not important enough for them to play in and NSL players should bear the burden of getting them through to the big matches. Farina should have picked them and seen who was really committed instead of taking the safe option.

I think Kewel has the potential to be a great captain that is if we ever play a another game, even New Zealand can organise matches. Maybe this will stoke his patriotic fires and get him to play for his country more often? There is an innate leadership feel about Kewel, who knows till they take the park and his attitude when we have to play away from Europe, but it is worth a try. I do agree that players like Emerton, Moore and Muscat seem far more committed to the course at this stage!

reason no overseas players didn't come to the ONC was that noone was invited cept for chipperfield. vidmar is way too old! i think we need to play oloisi as a striker rather then kewell who should ply LM laziridis, kewell and tiato are all descent LM's. one will prob play LB who do ya think will miss out?

I don't like Tiatto much - he is a thug. I say we should give a 3-4-1-2 lineup a look with Emerton and Kewell taking on the roles Cafu and Carlos play for Brazil. Both are very fast and can attack and defend. It would also solve the problem of who would play fullback as with Muscat and Vidmar getting on I can't see any obvious replacements.

I'm quite content with 4-4-2, just that Kewell needs to be playing at left wing even if he roams or cuts in from left side. Agostino or Aloisi should partner Viduka. The idea of Kewell running off Viduka the target man only works if Kewell wasn't much much better as a left winger. It's just the likes of Bruce McAvarney who keeps hyping up "Kewell and Viduka up front, wow!".

Muscat is another player I am not very impressed by and Lazaridis is more of a winger than defender. I don't think there are any obvious good Australian fullbacks. There are a few other good central defenders: Kisnorbo is being groomed for big things and Costanzo is the best defender in the NSL and I think would succede in Europe. A back four would be better but I am not convinced we have the players to make it work. 2 strikers and Kewell playing on the left though is pretty much seen by everyone as the way to go.

Emerton would be a much better captain for AUS than Kewell. He is more reliable and more commited to playing for his country. Hopefully the right choice is made!! :confused:

Emerton wouldnt be right but i think Schwarzer is the right man. Experience at a high level and consistantly plays for the NT. BTW what is the situation with our captain now, who is it?? :confused:

Kewell, Okon, Vidmar and Muscat in my opoion dont deserve the captaincy. Now Chipperfield is a player who I've seen over the years play for Australia - No matter what. but he doesnt command a first team spot in the lineup just yet but he seems like a good guy. Vidmar on the other hand is old and shit. I mean he doesnt even come off the bench for Cardiff City half the time, i cant wait for Kisnorbo or Madaschi to come in and put some new blood into the team.

I dont see a problem with Craig Moore being captain for Aus - he left Rangers to captain Aus at the olympics and subsequently was shown the boot by manager McCleish.
