Spanish giants Real Madrid have recently said that they are missing one striker for next season, and also a central defender, but while latest news reports that Real would not be ready to spend huge amounts for a defender like Nesta, there are more probabilities that they would be ready to spend some important money on a striker like Hernan Crespo.
Real Madrid are said to want one of Ronaldo, Shevchenko and Crespo. The first two are not for sale at any price, while Lazio is just waiting for the right bid to sell the Argentine striker.

Inter boss Hector Cuper has hinted that he is unwilling to release Cristiano Zanetti – even though he would get Alessandro Nesta in return.
The Lazio defender is on the market and had looked almost certain to join the Nerazzurri after the two clubs agreed a cash plus player exchange deal.
However, the negotiations stalled after Lazio insisted that they were only interested in cash plus the Italian midfielder. An offer that Cuper was unwilling to match.
"I’m not in charge of Inter’s transfer campaign," insisted the Coach. "All that I can say is that Cristiano Zanetti is a very important player for this side.
"I need to evaluate whether it is possible to do what I want without him at my disposal.
"Nevertheless, the President knows what I told him. This time around I gave him my full opinion."

Sergio Cragnotti spoke about the negotiations with Barcelona for the possible move of Gaizka Mendieta back to Spain, but also about the possible arrival of the Brazilian superstar Rivaldo to Lazio.
Cragnotti: "We are in contact with Barcelona almost every day. They want Mendieta and we want Rivaldo. What we are waiting for is to hear what the players think about this move. Barcelona is talking to Rivaldo to hear if he would accept a move and then we will have to talk to him to hear with him what kind of ambition he has to play for us."
Mendieta's wish to leave Rome is known since earlier.

SoccerAge.com sister site Rete.it can exclusively reveal that Juan Veron will be staying at Manchester United next season despite Lazio's best efforts to sign him.
"Veron has begun preparations with Manchester United and will remain in England next season," said an associate of the player's agent Gustavo Mascardi. "True, Lazio had offered Sorin in exchange for the player, but the negotiation has failed. Therefore, Veron will remain with United and Sorin with Lazio."

Alessandro Nesta’s switch to Inter is back on the cards after it was revealed that Cristiano Zanetti is ready to move as part of the deal.
The two clubs had agreed an £18m cash plus player fee but the negotiations stalled after Inter refused to release Zanetti to Lazio.
However, the midfielder himself has said that he is open to move to Rome if Inter finally decide to sacrifice him.
"Cristiano is a professional who knows the rules of football," said his agent Carlo Pallavicino.
"He understands that no player is untouchable. He wants to win with Inter but as a professional he would accept a move to Lazio."
Speculation suggests that boss Hector Cuper is now willing to release the player even if he had expressed his doubts after talks with President Massimo Moratti.
However, the signing of Matias Almeyda earlier this week and the fact that he would still have Luigi Di Biagio and Stephane Dalmat at his disposal, could now see Zanetti released.
Should the international make the move then he will return to the capital after winning the title with Roma just two seasons ago.

The talks between Juventus and SS Lazio over Italy defender Alessandro Nesta’s future have produced unforeseen results with the two clubs to go through with a triple swap deal.
Nesta’s future remains in doubt with Inter still hoping to sign the centre back but Lazio are now engaged in completing the swap with Juve.
Former Italian international midfielder Giuliano Giannichedda is leaving Lazio for Turin with defender Alessio Tacchinardi heading in the other direction.
Lazio want Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids to finally release Nesta but Portuguese centre back Fernando Couto is surprisingly wanted by Juve with Mark Iuliano to be swapped for the former Parma defender who served a four month suspension last season for drug abuse.
Completing the trio of swaps is the move of Alessandro Birindelli from Juventus to Lazio with Giuseppe Favalli moving to the Italian champions who have yet to settle the future of French defender Lilian Thuram who is wanted by Manchester United.

Gaizka Mendieta's agent denies there's any truth to rumours linking the Spain midfielder with English Premiership side Chelsea.
The Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has reported on the possibility of Mendieta moving to Stamford Bridge next season.
The Serie A club bought Mendieta from Spanish club Valencia last season in a £28 million transfer deal, but he has failed to make an impact, making only 20 appearances for the Biancoceleste.
Now, however, Lazio face financial difficulties and want to sell or loan Mendieta out.
But the player's agent, Alberto Toldra denied any interest from Chelsea.
"There is nothing it is just press speculation," Toldra said.
As it is, the 28-year-old could be set to move back to the Primera Liga as Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid are all showing interest in the Basque player.
The most likely deal would seem to be with Barcelona since coach Louis van Gaal has already admitted he would like to have the former Valencia player in his team.

Argentine forward Hernan Crespo arrived n Italy on Saturday to join Lazio for the summer retreat. But he let understand he still doesn't know if he will play at the Roman club in the coming season
"Well, I'm here to work hard, to spend a different championship than the past one. Inside of me, and I'm sure of all my team mates too, there are great spurs and a terrific will to make something important"
"However I know the transfer market is open till the end of August, and in front of a interesting offer, well, president Cragnotti could decide to sell me, even if my desire is to stay at Lazio"
Last days papers reported as Spanish giants Real Madrid are targeting the Argentine striker to strengthen their offensive line
Crespo continued "The first impact with Mancini as coach has been positive, the atmosphere looks different if compared the past season. Then I look to come back on my usual levels, not plagued by injuries as in the past league"
"This club needs to restart to win as soon as possible, and summer winning proclaims are not what we really need. Even the fact we play Uefa Cup could be positive to start a new row of successes"

It seems Lazio are ready to sign Mexican international Rafael Marquez. The defender currently plies his trade in France with Monaco but hugely impressed at the recent World Cup and caught the eye of a number of Italian suitors.
The Mexican has been in Rome all weekend to meet with Lazio club officials and agree terms. However, he will only sign if the much talked about transfer of Alessandro Nesta finally goes through.
Though no figure has been discussed with Monaco, it is expected the French club want in the region of £10m. It is a figure capital club President Sergio Cragnotti would want lowered if he was to sign the player.

Hernan Crespo wants to stay at Lazio but is well aware that his immediate future could lie elsewhere.
The striker was believed to be on his way out of the capital but as of yet no one has tabled an offer for the £35.7m signing.
"I want to stay here, to honour this shirt, but I know that if a decent offer comes in for me then President Cragnotti could decide to sell me," he said.
"After all you can still move on the market until August 31."
The Argentine had a sub-standard campaign last term in which injuries and a lack of form rarely saw him perform to his high levels.
Speculation suggests that the only possible destination for Crespo is Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants have admitted that they are looking for a new striker and defender even if they claim to not be interested in Crespo or his teammate Nesta.
The latter is also on the market but as of yet talks with Inter and Juventus have stalled.
However, the Bianconeri have again claimed that the international stopper is not of interest to the club.
Antonio Giraudo said: "In all probability Nesta will stay at Lazio. If that isn’t the case then he will finish up at Inter."

Reports from Italy suggest that Chelsea officials are in Rome to discuss a number of transfers with Lazio.
The London club are apparently set to make enquiries over the availability of Fernando Couto, Claudio Lopez and Fabio Liverani.
The Portuguese defender is said to be of interest to Claudio Ranieri even if new capital Coach Roberto Mancini is unlikely to release him.
The international stopper could become a fundamental figure for the side next season, especially if club captain Alessandro Nesta is sold to Inter.
A more likely bid to succeed is that of Claudio Lopez. The Argentine forward has failed to perform since his summer switch from Valencia two seasons ago.
Lopez (pictured) has also been linked with moves to Manchester United and a number of Spanish clubs.
Meanwhile, Liverani could also quit the Olimpico after falling on troubled times since his September switch from Perugia.
The international wasn’t totally welcomed by Lazio fans for his support for Roma as a youngster. His on the field displays have also failed to live up to his potential.
Chelsea have also been linked with moves for midfielders Dino Baggio and Gaizka Mendieta.

Lazio’s hopes of landing Rivaldo look over after Barcelona confirmed that they would not be completing any swap deal.
The Italian side were hoping to sign the Brazilian by offering Gaizka Mendieta in return for the forward.
However, Barca President Joan Gaspart has closed the door on any such negotiations. "There are no player swap deals on the cards," he maintained.
The Italian club have eyed a Rivaldo swoop for some time and President Sergio Cragnotti had admitted that negotiations were in progress.
"We have had and are continuing to have regular contact with Spain in an attempt to finalise this Mendieta-Rivaldo swap deal," the Olimpico chief stated last week.
"All we have to do is to agree terms with the player himself. Barcelona are having talks with him but we are keen to know what he thinks about becoming a Lazio player."
It was believed that the Spaniards were keen to release the player due to the fact that he has just one-year left on his Nou Camp deal.
That would make the former Deportivo player a free-agent next summer which would leave the Catalans facing the problem of losing him for nothing.
The newly crowned World Cup winner has already admitted that he has no interest in leaving the club despite Lazio’s attempts.
Premiership side Newcastle had also claimed to have discussed the possibility of bidding for the attacker earlier this summer.

Too many voices and too little movement. That statement sums up Lazio's transfer market of late. Some of the biggest names in world football are constantly linked with either moves away from or to the club, but no concrete deals so far.
Internazionale were tipped to sign Lazio skipper Alessandro Nesta sometime last week, but the reluctance of coach Hector Cuper to let go of (clearly) his favourite midfielder, Cristiano Zanetti has scuppered the deal.
However, now the move may be back on as Cragnotti has been seen busy negotiating with AS Monaco for Nesta's replacement, Mexican international Rafael Marquez. The player was seen in Rome this week and is apparantly discussing contract terms with the Rome club. However, two barriers stand in his way. One, clearly the definitive sale of Nesta, and two the high 15 million dollar asking price of Monace that Lazio cannot afford to pay.
Meanwhile, a cloud continues to surround the future of both Hernan Crespo and Gaizka Mendieta. While both players could stay at Lazio, it is becoming increasingly evident that if Nesta is not sold, Cragnotti will have to convince Real Madrid to buy Crespo (they seem the only club interested in him at the moment). While the sum earned from Crespo's sale might not earn them the mammoth 54 million they paid Parma for him a couple of seasons ago, it will go a long way in helping the club's financial cause.
Mendieta on the other hand is being lined up as bait for a straight swap with World Cup winner Rivaldo. This negotiation is very complex keeping in mind that Mendieta has done little over the past year to justify comparison to Rivaldo. However, the Catalan club are aware that the Brazilian ace has only one year left on his contract and is most likely going to leave on a Bosman free transfer at the end of this season. This would suggest that they might want to cash in on him before it's too late.
According to the biancocelesti president, Sergio Cragnotti, all that stands in the way of this deal is Rivaldo's personal decision and that at present seems to be to stay in Spain.

"I confirm no one of our directors contacted Ronaldo to persuade him to join us" Real boss added "He is a great player, but, honestly, it's also impossible to figure out his value after he almost didn't play last four seasons"
"Anyway summer market goes on till September, now it's just July" Perez concluded.

Brazilian World Cup winner Rivaldo has refused to meet two SS Lazio directors sent to Barcelona to discuss a transfer.
Rivaldo claimed last week that he did not want to leave Barca for the Rome club who have tracked him for the past three years.
The 29 year old insisted that he would not discuss his contract despite Barca president Joan Gaspart’s willingness to add his name to the talks over a possible swap deal with Lazio for Argentine striker Hernan Crespo.
Gaspart has so far refused a swap offer for Rivaldo but met Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti for talks in May to discuss Rivaldo’s future.

Alessandro Nesta has admitted that it is looking increasingly likely that he will remain at Lazio next season.
The international stopper was a summer target for Inter but talks between the two parties have failed to reach agreement.
"I’m a Lazio player and I will start pre-season training with them this week," said the Azzurri regular.
"When that happens it will probably mean that I will remain here which is something that I had always wanted.
"I only have one priority at the minute and that is Lazio. The rest is insignificant and I’ll be happy to remain."
Inter had agreed to pay £18m plus a player, but Lazio want Cristiano Zanetti as part of the deal. A player that the Milan side are unwilling to release.
Lazio director Massimo Cragnotti, son of President Sergio, also claimed that the player would still be at the Olimpico for the new campaign.

Lots of transfer rumors Posted July 18, 2002 - 14:35 by Mattias
There are a lot of transfer rumors surrounding Lazio but many of them seem now to be close to the reality and not only rumors/speculations.
Christian Manfredini and Eriberto should be heading to Lazio and could be joining Mancini's team in the next couple of days. Pesaresi, Turchetta and Evacuo should be moving to Chievo as part exchange. An amount of money is also set to be paid by Lazio to Chievo.
Gaizka Mendieta arrived to Vigo di Fassa today but he should not even bother to make himself comfortable at the hotel, as Barcelona coach Van Gaal wants him at any cost. Lazio and Barcelona should have reached an agreement, the player goes on loan the first season and Barcelona will then next summer buy the Spanish international. The problem is Valencia who wants 12 million Euro for the fine that Lazio have to pay. Lazio, Valencia and Barcelona are today in talks about how to solve this problem. It's not unlikely that a player could be moving from Lazio to Valencia in order to pay the fine. The player could be Negro, Favalli, Pancaro or Gottardi.
Hernan Crespo is wanted by Manchester United and Real Madrid. The English club would pay Lazio 27 million Euro plus remove the 18 million Euro that Lazio still has to pay Man Utd for Jaap Stam. Real Madrid would be ready to offer 35 million Euro plus one of their bench players. The Argentine striker would also be happy to move as he, from reports at Vigo di Fassa, seem to be the only player who is not totally convinced by the Lazio project and is the one who is waiting for a call to pack his things and leave Lazio.
Lazio's main objective right now is of course to sell players, and if possible also buy Eriberto and Manfredini because Mancini has requested those two players.

According to latest rumors, Lazio and Valencia have reached an agreement regarding the fine for the possible sale of Gaizka Mendieta. Valencia had in the contract with Lazio put an option that Lazio could not sell Mendieta back to a Spanish club after one season, and if Lazio did a fine of 12 million Euro was to be paid.
Lazio have been in talks with Valencia to solve the problem, if Mendieta would be sold to Barcelona, and that seem to be very likely now.
According to latest reports, Lazio have managed to negotiate with Valencia to a very good poing. Lazio would pay Valencia 3 million Euro if Mendieta will end up in a Spanish club during the summer.

Lazio captain Alessandro Nesta spoke yesterday, and said that he hoped to stay at Lazio but that if a transfer was arranged in the coming days he would be moving.
Nesta: "I talked to Sergio Cragnotti a couple of days ago and he explained the situation to me. If I will be sold I won't create problems because I know now that Lazio could need to sell me. Cragnotti was very honest with me, as he has always been. I will do what's best for Lazio, and hopefully I will stay here. Foreign team? Yes, I would accept to move to a foreign team if Lazio sell me because that would mean they offered most money and that Lazio is in need of it."

Lazio close in on Eriberto Posted July 20, 2002 - 13:24 by Mattias
Chievo winger Eriberto looks set for a move to Lazio after the Biancocelesti stepped up their interest in the 23-year old.
The Brazilian had seemed set to join Juventus before the Bianconeri turned their attentions to Verona star Mauro Camoranesi. Eriberto, 23, enjoyed an excellent season with Chievo last year catching the eye with his energy and enthusiasm on the right wing.
Lazio are also close to signing Chievo teammate Christian Manfredini but have still to agree a fee with the Verona club for the Ivory Coast star. Eriberto would cost in the region of £6m having scored four times in 30 appearances last season. The ex-Palmeiras man moved to Italy in 1998 and spent two unhappy years in Bologna before dropping down to Serie B with Chievo.
After helping the Gialloblu to UEFA Cup qualification last season, he has set his sights on a move to a bigger club. Lazio are prepared to offer Emanuele Pesaresi and midfielder Roberto Baronio as part of the deal.

Lazio steps up talks over Crespo Posted July 20, 2002 - 11:08 by Mattias
Hernan Crespo has moved closer to Manchester United after reports yesterday that Lazio were prepared to offer him to Old Trafford.
The Rome club still owes United a significant portion of Jaap Stam's transfer fee and would like to clear their debt by selling the Argentine to United.
Crespo was also a target for Real Madrid, though sports chief Jorge Valdano has cooled his interest in recent days.
United and Lazio have been in regular contact for much of the close-season with the futures of Juan Veron, Claudio Lopez, Juan Pablo Sorin and Crespo all on the agenda.
It's understood that the Crespo deal is being pushed by Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti.

Lazio and Inter in talks again Posted July 20, 2002 - 11:11 by Mattias
Alessandro Nesta’s move from Lazio to Inter has hit another stumbling block with the Nerazzurri reiterating that they won’t release midfielder Cristiano Zanetti as part of the package.
Inter and Lazio reopened talks for the international defender yesterday but neither party could agree on a fee. Inter offered a £15m player plus deal whilst Lazio are holding out for £18m and former Roma man Zanetti.
Inter are refusing to sell Zanetti who is an integral part of Coach Hector Cuper’s plans having enjoyed an excellent first full season with the club last year. The Milan side have also blocked any move to Lazio for midfielder Stephane Dalmat and it is believed they have offered the Romans Emre Belozoglu as part of the deal.
Lazio President Massimo Cragnotti yesterday admitted. "Nothing has changed although the deal isn’t dead. We want Zanetti, they don’t want to sell him."
Nesta has been on the market all summer as Lazio try and resolve their growing financial problems. However, despite interest from Inter, Juve and Real Madrid no deal has been struck and Nesta, who returned to training this week, admits it is increasingly likely he will stay with his home-town club.

Hey, you stand to lose a lot of money (about $18 million) on this deal. Just cause he had one bad season at Lazio, doesn't mean he won't perform at Barca. Maybe he had trouble adapting, was misused or couldn't get a consistent run in the side. Either way, he was brilliant with Valencia not to mention in the CL.

Stam repeats he won't move from Lazio Posted July 22, 2002 - 17:46 by Mattias
Jaap Stam has rubbished speculation that he will replace Rio Ferdinand at Leeds United.
Reports in England on Monday had suggested that the stopper was being targeted by the Elland Road club after they agreed to sell £30m Ferdinand to Man Utd.
But Stam has claimed that his career in English football ended after he was released by Manchester United last September.
"That is a part of my life that is definitely over," he told his website at icons.com. "I will never return to the Premier League.
"My family are happy and settled in Rome and I want to finally show Lazio what I am capable of in the new season.
"I see no reason why I have to be the player to replace Ferdinand at Leeds."
Stam, who has also been linked with Inter recently, moved to Italy last season after a £16m switch.
However, his first campaign was marred by injury and a doping suspension after he tested positive for nandrolone.

07/24/2002. Within a matter of days – or possibly hours – Juventus are expected to complete the signing of unspectacular but versatile and reliable defender Giuseppe Favalli from financially troubled Roman club SS Lazio.
Favalli, 30, had been tipped for a transfer since the end of last season, when he announced through his agent that he was eager for a change after ten years at the Stadio Olimpico. Lazio are expected to receive in the neighbourhood of €3.5 million for the player, though Juve are apparently intent on inserting Alessandro Birindelli into the deal.

Crespo knows he could have to leave Posted July 27, 2002 - 18:24 by Mattias
There are more question marks over the future of Hernan Crespo after he admitted he could leave Lazio this summer.
The Argentine striker could be sacrificed by the Roman giants to help ease their financial problems after Alessandro Nesta’s move to Inter has stalled.
"I still feel that my position at this club is unstable," the forward claimed. "The transfer market is still open until August 31 and we will see what happens."
Speculation in Italy suggests that Crespo is still a target for both Real Madrid and Manchester United.
The Argentine had a poor campaign by his standards last season as he and his teammates just sneaked into the UEFA Cup on the last day of term.
The former River Plate man signed for Lazio in the summer of 2000 from Parma for £35.7m.

Lazio repeats that Zanetti is key for Nesta Posted July 27, 2002 - 18:23 by Mattias
Inter have been warned that they will only land Alessandro Nesta if they give Lazio cash and Cristiano Zanetti.
The international defender is a known target for the Nerazzurri but they are only willing to offer £18m and Turkish midfielder Emre.
"If President Massimo Moratti doesn’t offer us Cristiano Zanetti then he will not get his hands on Nesta," said Sergio Cragnotti’s spokesman Guido Paglia.
"There now seems no doubt that Nesta will remain with us. Last week we saw Manchester United sign Rio Ferdinand for £30m and he isn’t as good as Alessandro.
"We want £30m and a player exchange because it is our intention to defend the patronage of this club."
The player himself has admitted that he wants to remain in the capital but has said he is willing to be sacrificed should the club need to do so.
Speculation had suggested that Nesta could join the San Siro side in the next week after Lazio failed at their first attempt to be registered for the new season because of their financial situation.

Lazio offer Crespo swap for Veron Posted July 27, 2002 - 18:16 by Mattias
Juan Sebastian Veron could be on his way back to Lazio if Manchester United agree to a swap deal for Argentina striker Hernan Crespo.
The Rome club, where Veron enjoyed his finest years, have put together a package that would enable the two players to swap clubs, with United agreeing to forfeit the £8million they are still owed by Lazio from last season's Jaap Stam transfer.
United have not yet been contacted officially but will be sounded out in the next few days. With the Champions League looming, manager Sir Alex Ferguson is in the market for a centre forward after the sale of Dwight Yorke to Blackburn yesterday left him with just three - Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the unproven Diego Forlan.
In common with most of Europe's top clubs, United have been contacted by Barcelona about the availability of Brazilian striker Rivaldo but have shown no interest.
Crespo has been a prolific striker in Serie A during his time with Parma and Lazio. The 27-year-old has scored 101 goals in 170 appearances in Italy and was briefly the world's most expensive player two summers ago when Lazio paid £37m for him.
He remains a potent force but with Lazio in financial trouble, they are prepared to offload him if it means the return of Veron and the cancellation of their debts on the Stam transfer.
The United boss remains reluctant to try to sell midfielder Veron and still feels that the 27-year-old may yet prove himself to be worth the £28m paid to Lazio last summer.
However, if Lazio make a formal attempt to pull this deal off then Ferguson would be presented with a clear opportunity to solve two pressing problems in one go.

Man Utd in Rome to negotiate Posted July 30, 2002 - 13:33 by Mattias
Manchester United officials will travel to Rome today in an effort to capture two Argentine Lazio players.
Argentina internationals, Juan Pablo Sorin and Claudio Lopez will be the main topic of negotiations between Manchester United and Lazio when officials from both clubs meet in Italy over the next 48 hours.
The Old Trafford club are also keen on fellow Argentine international Hernan Crespo; but Lazio rate the striker at around £30 million, putting him beyond Sir Alex Ferguson's remaining budget for the close season.
The Romans still owe United a large part of the transfer fee which took Jaap Stam from England to Italy last June and the Premiership giants are keen to take midfielder Sorin and striker Lopez instead of the remainder of the cash.
United face competition for Lopez's signature from Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri, who has been in close contact with Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti for some months now.

Valencia report Lazio Posted July 31, 2002 - 14:12 by Mattias
Valencia have complained to FIFA after Lazio failed to pay 1.2m euros according to reports in Spain.
The Italian giants were reportedly set to pay the fee on Friday as part of the deal which saw midfielder Gaizka Mendieta move to Barcelona this summer.
The Spanish star joined Lazio last year but failed to impress in Serie A and has quickly headed back home.
However, Valencia included a special clause which would net them cash should the player return to La Liga before June 2003.
Speculation suggests that Valencia could actually stop Mendieta playing for Barcelona until the Italian side cough up the money.
FIFA are set to make a decision in a bid to resolve the situation.

Mancini says Crespo is staying Posted July 31, 2002 - 10:43 by Mattias
Lazio chief Roberto Mancini has dismissed claims that he could lose Argentina ace Hernan Crespo to Manchester United because of the club's financial position.
After seeing his side win 1-0 at Liverpool, Mancini claimed that the Rome club's finances were good enough to avoid having to let star men leave.
It had been suggested that Lazio would be prepared to let £35million Crespo leave - even in exchange for Juan Veron - to save money.
But Mancini said: "I think Lazio's finances are fine at the moment, I don't think we will have to let the likes of Crespo or Claudio Lopez or anything like that with the current state of our finances."
Mancini was delighted with his side's display in front of 44,000 plus at Anfield, and said: "We didn't lose the ball, we played well and worked hard. If we play like that in the league at home we will do fine.
"I didn't expect this much from the game, very few teams win at Liverpool."

Lazio post game comments Posted July 31, 2002 - 11:01 by Mattias
Lazio's victory away against Liverpool was important for the morale of the team, that is now heading towards an important season if all the players are going to stay with the team.
Massimo Cragnotti: "Except of the result, which we are very satisfied with, it's important to see that the players are ready to make sacrifices for the team. I saw a team that worked hard for each other."
Lazio coach Roberto: "The result is not very important this early in the season. However, it's a prestigious victory to win here at Liverpool. We have still some work to do with our game but I think we are heading in the right direction. We have worked hard lately and this result will help us to work harder."

Man Utd insist on Crespo Posted August 1, 2002 - 13:51 by Mattias
Manchester United are insisting on Lazio's Hernan Crespo, despite the Rome club's reluctance.
Lazio are prepared to offer Juan Pablo Sorin and Claudio Lopez, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's priority is Crespo, according to Corriere dello Sport today.
Lazio still owe United almost £10 million from Jaap Stam's transfer last year and are offering their Argie trio in part-exchange for the debt.
The players' representatives jetted out of Spain last night for England to meet with United officials.

Lazio striker Claudio Lopez has admitted he could be playing for a new club by the start of the season.
The Argentine international has been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea in recent weeks.
He said last night: "It is a pleasure to work with (trainer) Roberto Mancini.
"But I do not know how long I will be here for. There's been a lot of reports about me moving.
"I don't let this affect me. I'm ready for big season this year."

The demise of Fiorentina has seen star striker Enrico Chiesa become the latest hot property on the transfer market.
The player, like his Viola teammates, is available on a free transfer after the club’s financial problems saw them not included in the new Serie B campaign.
Reports in Italy suggest that the former Parma hitman is being seriously tracked by three sides.
Juventus are the current favourites to land the star as they look to add one more forward to their quartet of Alex Del Piero, David Trezeguet, Marcelo Salas and Marcelo Zalayeta.
Lazio are also in the chase after they made a move for him earlier this summer. It had seemed as if the deal was done before it collapsed after the Biancocelesti wanted the player on loan for a year.
While a third option for Chiesa seems to be Serie B promotion chasers Sampdoria, the club that he made his name with in the mid 90s.
Chiesa missed almost all of the last campaign with injury after he had undergone knee ligament surgery last October.
However, the 32-year-old is back in training and eager for the new season even if as of yet he has no idea which shirt he will be wearing.

Stam hopes Nesta will stay Posted August 4, 2002 - 20:02 by Mattias
Forget Juventus, Valencia and Liverpool. The team with the best defence in world football are Lazio.
That's the opinion of the Biancocelesti's Dutch centre-back Jaap Stam, who is desperate for captain Alessandro Nesta to end weeks of transfer speculation by confirming that his future lies in Rome.
The Italy international defender has been the subject of a bid from Inter Milan and strong interest from Juventus and Manchester United during the summer as it became clear that Lazio were willing to sell their best players in order to ease their precarious financial situation.
"I hope that Nesta stays, because I can't wait to show people how good I believe our defensive partnership can be," Stam told www.gazzetta.it.
"Our recent 1-0 friendly win at Liverpool proved that we are doing very well with our preparation, because the Premiership starts before Serie A and so, in theory, the Liverpool players had more match fitness than we did.
"We have a large squad of players, and this should mean that there should be plenty of competition for places in the season ahead.
"Such competition is a crucial element for a team aiming to win major trophies," he added.
The 30-year-old's own future appeared in doubt earlier in the summer, with Leeds United thought to have identified him as the replacement for Rio Ferdinand, who joined Manchester United at the end of July.
Many thought that Stam would be keen to bring an end to his Italian stint, as he has spent a difficult 12 months at the Stadio Olimpico.
Lazio finished a disappointing sixth in Serie A last season, during which the former PSV Eindhoven and Manchester United man was forced to spend four months on the sidelines after testing positive for the banned substance nandrolone in November 2001.
But the Dutch international has moved quickly to quash reports of his imminent departure, claiming a move away from Rome is highly unlikely.
"I have no intention of leaving Lazio, even though you can never say never in football," he said.
"I would not be keen on a return to England, simply because I have already played for the best team there and have won everything there is to win with them.
"And another major factor for me is that my family and I love Rome and Italy."
Stam's upbeat mood is another indication of the new wave of optimism apparent at Lazio following the arrival of Roberto Mancini as manager.
Mancini, who replaced the sacked Alberto Zaccheroni at the end of the last campaign, has already won praise from Argentina strikers Claudio Lopez and Hernan Crespo, who had earlier been tipped to leave the club.
The arrival of full-backs Massimo Oddo from Verona and Argentina international Juan Pablo Sorin from Cruzeiro are sure to rejuvenate what looked a stale first-team set-up at the back end of last season, while Gaizka Mendieta has put an abrupt end to a disastrous Serie A experience by joining Barcelona on a one-year loan deal.
But the result of the 'will-he-won't-he' debate that continues to surround Nesta will determine in what frame of mind the two-time Italian champions are to begin the new season.

According to Italian sources, United want to wrap up a deal for the Argentine as quickly as possible and Lazio are already lining up a replacement in Fiorentina striker Enrico Chiesa.
Lazio officials will continue talks with United over the weekend, though the Rome club will have to lower their asking price - which is currently £29 million.

The pair have been rowing over wingers Christian Manfredini and Eriberto since May 6.

Biancocelesti president Sergio Cragnotti is unwilling to pay £18 million for the pair, and claims that the signed contracts were just an agreement and not the sign of a complete transfer.

Lazio will blossom says Fiore Posted August 5, 2002 - 10:48 by Mattias
Lazio can fight for the Scudetto despite last season’s nightmare according to Stefano Fiore.
The midfielder arrived at the Olimpico last summer with a host of other big names but the capital side only managed to sneak into the UEFA Cup on the last day of term.
However, despite speculation that a host of players would be released much of the squad has stayed the same.
"Considering that most of the players here have remained then I think we can fight for the Scudetto. We have nothing to be envious of from any other teams," he said.
One player that looked destined to leave was captain Alessandro Nesta but he seems set to stay, much to the delight of the former Udinese midfielder.
"I think that Alessandro will turn out to be our best signing. I think the risk that he will be leaving has ended now," Fiore added.
"He is our symbol but more importantly one of our best players and we will keep him close to us."
The Italian international also revealed that Coach Roberto Mancini was doing well and promising to turn Lazio into entertainers.
"Mancini is working a lot on our mentality seeing as most of us started having doubts about what we were capable of after last season," he added.
"But he also wants a very offensive side, one that is taught to attack."
Meanwhile, there are reports that Antonino Asta is wanted by the club. The former Toro player is available on a free transfer.
However, his signing will probably depend on whether the Football League rule that Lazio must complete the signings of Chievo duo Christian Manfredini and Eriberto.
The Biancocelesti signed contracts with the two players, but protested when Chievo filed the paperwork with the League to complete the transfers.
The bitter row between the two clubs is set to go to the Football League as an agreement over the contracts could not be reached.

Lazio boss Roberto Mancini has warned that there is still work to do after they beat Derby County on Monday.
The capital outfit won 2-1 less than a week after they also collected a 1-0 victory at Anfield against Liverpool.
"Winning helps you to keep winning and that is how we should look at the games we have played in England," said the tactician.
"I’m happy with this win but we should take it for what it is. The important thing is that it gives us morale and helps us continue our work.
"I’m starting to see the sort of team that I want and like, but the road is still very long."
Lazio took the lead last night through Gottardi who struck in the 40th minute.
The hosts levelled it with Murray early in the second half before Crespo netted the winner with 20 minutes to go.

Sorin future in doubt Posted August 8, 2002 - 14:08 by Mattias
There are continuing rumours that Lazio new boy Juan Pablo Sorin is set for a quick Olimpico exit.
The Argentine only arrived in Rome this summer from Cruzeiro but reports suggest that a move to Manchester United or Leeds is on the cards.
Lazio may be forced to consider offers for the World Cup star after the proposed sales of Alessandro Nesta and Hernan Crespo have not occurred.
Nesta was linked with a move to Inter but they have pulled out of the chase after completing the signing of Fabio Cannavaro. It now seems only Juventus could land the star even if that seems unlikely.
As for Crespo, a £35m signing from Parma two years ago, he has been linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid but a lack of finances in the European transfer market may see him remain in Rome.
Meanwhile, Lazio could complete the signing of free agent Antonino Asta (pictured) if they can sell current right winger Lucas Castroman.
Asta, capped by Italy last term, is currently unemployed but has been heavily linked with the Biancocelesti and Inter.

Ferguson offered Sorin in cut-price £8m deal
By Oliver Kay and Peter Lansley
SIR ALEX FERGUSON is considering an invitation from Lazio to sign Juan Pablo Sorin, the Argentina wing back, as well as stepping up his pursuit of Julien Escudé, the France Under-21 defender. Manchester United have been offered Sorin in a cut-price deal that would write off Lazio’s £8 million debt to the club from last summer’s purchase of Jaap Stam.
Sorin has also been linked with an £8 million move to Leeds United, but Lazio’s preference is for a deal with United. Either way, Ferguson is determined to press ahead with his bid to sign Escudé, 22, from Rennes. Officials from the two clubs are due to meet in France this weekend.
Leeds hope to complete the £2.75 million purchase of Nick Barmby from Liverpool today, with a further £1 million payable depending on appearances. Gérard Houllier, the Liverpool manager, hopes to use the money to finance a bid for a winger with Damien Duff, of Blackburn Rovers, and Brett Emerton, of Feyenoord, top of his list.
George Koumantarakis, the South Africa forward, has joined Bolton Wanderers from FC Basel on a trial basis. Marlon Broomes, the former Blackburn and England Under-21 defender, has joined Preston North End on a free transfer.
The two most high-profile players in English women’s football will be absent from tonight’s FA Nationwide Women’s Community Shield at Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road. Injury deprives Marieanne Spacey, Fulham’s new signing from Arsenal, of the chance to make a competitive debut against her former club, and Angie Banks, whom the newly-promoted southern division champions initially attempted to lure from Highbury, is away on holiday.
Spacey, 36, last season’s leading scorer for Arsenal as they won the Premier League national division, put off her proposed retirement at the end of the campaign to sign for Fulham, the only full-time professional team in the league, who are expected to challenge strongly this time for Arsenal’s title.
Vic Akers, the Arsenal manager, considers Fulham’s professional edge will make them hard to beat. “We expect the title to be a one-horse race,” Akers said. “We’ve been working hard, but I shouldn’t expect we’ll be in the same condition as they are.”

Milan interested in Nesta... Posted August 9, 2002 - 13:49 by Mattias
After losing Fabio Cannavaro to rivals Inter, Milan are considering a multi-million pound approach for Lazio’s Alessandro Nesta.
The Rossoneri were hotly tipped to reach agreement with Parma for Cannavaro before their city cousins swooped for the £15m international last night.
That development has now led to speculation suggesting that the Rossoneri are set to make a bid to land Nesta.
The Milan giants are desperately searching for a quality central defender after a number of pre-season friendlies have underlined a weakness at the back.
Milan had stated earlier this summer that they were not in the chase to land Nesta because of the costs involved.
However, with the new season on the horizon, Milan officials are said to be seriously considering making a move for the stopper.
Nesta had been heavily linked with a move to Inter but the Nerazzurri failed to reach agreement with Lazio over the fee.
Juventus had also held a number of talks with the Olimpico giants but they seem overloaded with central defenders with Lilian Thuram, Paolo Montero, Mark Iuliano, Ciro Ferrara, Salvatore Fresi and Igor Tudor already at the club.
Nesta is valued at around £30m and a proposed Milan offer would probably consist of a player plus cash offer.

...But Lazio intend to keep the captain Posted August 9, 2002 - 13:49 by Mattias
Lazio President Sergio Cragnotti has insisted that Alessandro Nesta will stay after Inter signed Fabio Cannavaro.
The central defender was heavily linked with a move away from the Olimpico with Inter his likely destination.
However, the Nerazzurri’s capture of Cannavaro has brought an end to the Nesta saga according to Cragnotti.
"Nesta will definitely stay here with us and that is for certain," he said. "Inter have a very strong side after signing Cannavaro but we have an even better player and we are keeping hold of him."
Some reports on Thursday had claimed that Juventus and Milan could possibly make a late attempt to sign the capital captain, but Cragnotti maintains that the squad will remain as it is.
"The start of the new season is very close and Coach Roberto Mancini will have this side to work with," he added.
"I can also confirm that we have not received any concrete offers for Hernan Crespo or Claudio Lopez."
The two Argentines had been linked with a number of sides in Spain and England but now look set to stay in Rome.

Liverani look forward to great season Posted August 9, 2002 - 13:44 by Mattias
Fabio Liverani is looking to archive last season’s poor displays and return to the form that saw him win Azzurri honours.
The Lazio midfielder had a desperately disappointing first season in Rome after his September move from Perugia.
But the 26-year-old maintains that he and his club are ready to return to the top of the Italian game.
"My primary objective is to return to the player that I was two years ago and to be at the complete disposal of the Coach for the good of the team," he said.
"The Coach is looking to get the very best out of his individual players in a bid to gel together a system of play. On a personal level, I would love to get back into the national squad."
Lazio started the last campaign as one of the favourites for the Scudetto but ended the season by just sneaking into a UEFA Cup spot.
"Despite what happened last term we don’t feel inferior to anyone. We suffered a lot of injuries and other problems but we missed out on a place in the Champions’ League by just three points," he continued.
"We are working well and all of the squad is determined to make up for the disappointing campaign last season. We can’t wait until Serie A kicks off again."

08/10/2002. Alessandro Nesta could complete his move to Milan this evening following reports of a new £30 million bid from president Silvio Berlusconi.

08/10/2002. In a sudden news flash, AC Milan have revealed that President Berlusconi has decided to personally step in and put an end to the Nesta saga.
"Now I'm going to take care of this, so that we will solve this issue, otherwise it will last forever," said the Italian Prime Minister and Media mogul.
"The Cavaliere dedicated plenty of time to this issue, and he remained in close contact with Galliani," the statemennt went on.
Berlusconi has become less involved in Milan's affairs over the last 5-6 years, but it is well known that when he steps in, he usually gets what he wants.
The richest man in Italy will now make the decision regarding the arrival of Nesta in Milan and all indications seem to point at the close of this affair with Nesta dressed in red-and -black: a fact that will surely confirm Milan as the 'Dream Team' that it once was known to be.

08/10/2002. According to SoccerAge.com's sister site Rete.it, Juventus are trying to pull off an Inter by jumping in a with a bid for Alessandro Nesta just when the player seems to be hours away from Milan.
AC Milan were close to signing Fabio Cannavaro last week, but their cousins Inter jumped in with a last minute bid to take the defender home. Now, Milan could lose their second big defender bid in a week if Juve succeed.
Moggi has apparantly noted that there is a difference between what Milan are offering (35 million) and what Cragnotti desires (44 million) and has tabled an offer of Alessio Tacchinardi, Mark Iuliano plus 20 million.
The only thing that might be in Milan's favour right now is the power of Silvio Berlusconi and the fact that they are offering all cash.
Only hours ago, Berlusconi had stated that he would step in and take matters into his own hands in an attempt to end this saga for good. This was perceived by many as confirmation that Milan would sign the Italian international. But, now things may have gone awry for the red-and-black society again.
Either way, the truth will be out in about 12-24 hours.

AC Milan failed to sign Nesta.
Milan have released a statement officially ending their negotiations with Lazio for defender Alessandro Nesta.
“Milan would like to point out,” read the statement on their official website this evening, “that Vice-President Adriano Galliani has made an offer of £17m to be paid over three years.”
“Lazio refused this bid and at this point, in accordance with Biancocelesti President Sergio Cragnotti, the negotiations for Nesta can be considered over.”
The news comes following a hesitation on behalf of the Rossoneri in talks for the Italian international.
An initial bid was tabled 24 hours after their main target, Parma captain Fabio Cannavaro, completed a surprise £15m move to rivals Inter.
A reinforcement for the defence was needed and it was claimed that Milan were willing to offer up to £25m for the Azzurri star.
However, following a meeting with President Silvio Berlusconi in Sardinia, the San Siro side decided that Nesta was too expensive.

08/12/2002. Adriano Galliani has explained to the rossonero supporters why the club chose to retract their bid for Alessandro Nesta.
"The sum they were asking, which I shall not disclose was too high for us. For reasons of amortization, we could not go beyond 26 million Euros over a period of 3 years."
"I can also confirm that President Berlusconi never intended to step into the negotiation. I have personally conducted the talks."
"Nesta is a great player, the only one capable of improving our backline, but since we cannot afford the price tag, we will not look to other solutions. We have a strong defence."
"Cragnotti is right! If Manchester United paid 45 million for Ferdinand...surely Nesta is worth at least that."
"The supporters and media will now surely criticize us for a failed transfer market. But, I would be quick to remind them that we acquired two great champions like Rivaldo and Tomasson for free. In defence? We added Simic to an already imposing backline."
"Unless Cragnotti decides to rethink and lower Nesta's price, we can consider this deal concluded."

08/13/2002. Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi has categorically stated that the club will not move for Alessandro Nesta after Lazio failed to agree a deal with Milan for the defender.
"Nesta is outside of our budget," said Moggi.
The only possible way he could have arrived would have been for Lilian Thuram and Edgar Davids to be sold, but Moggi has again insisted that this will not happen.
"Davids and Thuram are ours and will remain at Juventus," he continued. "I don't see why we should hurt ourselves and spoil our work, after having built an almost perfect team, with a reserve for each regular."

Mancini confident Nesta would stay Posted August 13, 2002 - 15:39 by Mattias
Lazio boss Roberto Mancini maintains that Alessandro Nesta will stay at the club after moves to Inter and Milan fell through.
The international stopper has been linked with a host of sides this summer but none have come close to matching the capital club’s £30m asking price.
"The matter is now closed," insisted Mancini. "Nesta will stay with us now and the club has assured me that he will be the captain for the coming season.
"I’m happy with the way this saga has ended even if I did manage to remain very calm throughout all of it.
"The club kept me informed on a daily basis and I knew they would do everything possible to keep the player."
Some newspaper reports yesterday claimed that Juventus would now make one last attempt to land the star, but that report has been denied.
"Nesta is out of our budget," insisted Juve transfer guru Luciano Moggi.
The Bianconeri director then moved to quash insistent rumours that the club were still trying to sell Edgar Davids and Lilian Thuram.
"They belong to us and will remain with us," he added. "I don’t see why we should do ourselves harm after constructing an almost perfect side.
"We have brought players this summer that we were missing and the side will not change anymore from now on."

In spite of a good beginning of season, Lopez will be transfered as soon as possible. Chelsea is interested in the Argentine player. Lazio asks 22 millions euro for the player but the English are convinced they will be able to get him for 20

TRANSFERS NEWS: Milan on Nesta again!
Reports claim the Rossoneri have made a new bid to tempt Alessandro Nesta to the San Siro, but may turn to Jaap Stam instead.
The two clubs had been in talks last week for the defender, but Lazio had refused the £17m offer and officially taken Nesta off the market.
The Italian press now suggests that the bid was raised to £24.6m in a meeting in Sardinia on Thursday, but that the Biancocelesti again thought the sum below his £35m asking price.
Milan are in need of defensive reinforcements following another disappointing display against Slovan Liberec in the Champions’ League.
If Nesta cannot fit inside their budget, teammate Jaap Stam certainly can. The 30-year-old Dutchman has not really settled at Lazio and could be sold for £10m or less.
The former Manchester United man has been linked with the San Siro side in the past and appears to be the only alternative to Juve’s Lilian Thuram.
Lazio signings blocked.
Sergio Cragnotti has until August 31 to solve the probl
