Since the qualifying for the CL will begin within the next few weeks i think this is a good time to post this thread. In this thread you can discuss Celtic's chances in the CL and their games as the season progresses. An official Scottish league thread will be posted before the season begins.

I think that the main thing is getting into the group stages. This year we are seeded to we should have an easier tie than last year. Having said that, we showed against Ajax that its not always the seeds that go through. Once we're in the group stages, who knows what we can do. We almost made it to the second group stage last year and I feel with a few new addition we could make it this year. The main thing though, is that we have to make it to the first round proper.

I agree...we can do it to the second round ;)

Celtic needs reinforcements before that will happen.

Roberto Abrego

I think the team is ok right now we just need a little luck and an easy group ;)

There won't be any easy groups. Last season's advemtures will be vital experience, but they musn't bottle it like they did last season.

doz
07-25-2002, 03:57 PM
Yes it will be tough because they are in the fourth pot and could potentially get a Real Madrid,Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan group but hopefully it'll be somewhat easier.

But first Celtic have to make it through the final qualifying stage where they will face either MSK Zilina or Basel.

the only reason they got knocked out last season was because they were cheated in turin. if they had escaped with a draw from that match they would've made it.

Celtic has beaten FC Basel in the CL 3rd qualifying round 3-1 with golas from Larsson(pen), Sutton and Sylla. Larsson also missed a penalty. Good result though.;)

Roberto Abrego
08-15-2002, 11:20 PM
yes this was a great result I doubt they can do something at their home....

I am just hoping to get a not to hard qualifying group...I dont understand why are we seeded as #4?

doz
08-17-2002, 12:18 PM
I also don't understand why Celtic are 4th seeds and teams like AEK Athens and Olympiakos are 3rd seeds.

Roberto Abrego
08-20-2002, 04:09 AM
Its strange....do u know how are teams seeded???

feggie
08-21-2002, 01:32 PM
past performances in europe(last 2-4 years i think!) and the performances of other teams from the same country in the same time period, thats why scotland has 2 representatives in the champions league next year!

Roberto Abrego
08-24-2002, 04:05 AM
they always have 2...

feggie
08-28-2002, 10:17 PM

I just heard about Suduva they beat Brann SK a good norweigan side...

Hahaha, After you lost to Basel, you need to be careful of every team you face.

BTW, If Larsson made the PK in the 1st leg, then you could qualify but of course i wouldn't want you too :D

Rangers beaten 2-0 in Czech Republic by some team with an unspellable and unpronouncable name.

doz
09-20-2002, 04:43 PM
Celtic beat FC Suduva 8-1 with a hat trick from Larsson. I can't even remember who got the others! If you're interested find out yourself!:D

Lets all laugh at Rangers, Lets all laugh at Rangers ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha ha. Even if they turn around the tie at Ibrox, this still ranks as one of the worst defeats and performances in their history. TERRIFIC.

I'm so laughing at the Rangers and I'll be laughing more when Celtic beats them in the SPL 3-0. Go Bhoys!

Cheers!

Celtic ease though but Rangers are sensationally dumped out in extra time by Zizkov. It was 2-0 at FT to Gers but Zizkov were 2-0 up after the 1st leg so it went to extra time. Gers took the lead but Zikov equalised and that's how it remained leaving Rangers out of the competition on away goals. :D

Go Rovers! Will finally get my EPL coverage in about 2-3 weeks. Sounds like David Thompson is really doing well. Good for him, he was wasted at Liverpool.

Just to update...... Celtic undeservedly grabbed a 1-0 win over Blackburn in 1st leg at Celtic Park despite being played off the pitch.

VivaBarcaInter
11-11-2002, 07:38 PM
Hehe, yeah they did!!!

Celtic barely got out of second gear, yet still managed to win AND keep a clean sheet against a top English team. Yet again, they have answered English critisism. I noticed that Blackburn have been doing a lot of complaining and slagging since then. I don't see why, it's all very good playing little pass games in midfield but if you don't actually do anything with the ball you can't complain.

VivaBarcaInter

And just to rub it in Souness' face, they went to Blackburn, dominated and won 2-0.

Larsson (again) and Sutton against his old club.

Celtic will have it tough in the next round against Celta Vigo.

doz
11-29-2002, 02:18 PM
Celtic gained a 1-0 first leg adantage over Celta Vigo with a second half strike from Larsson. Celtic dominated and really should have scored more which will be worrying for their tough looking trip to Spain.

Azulgrana, can you keep supporting the team Celtic plays. If you do, we'll go all the way.

We would have battered Celta if the referee wasn't a complete wanker.

And Celtic win again. Right Azul. Tell me yer a Stuttgart fan now, right?

And mibbe Liverpool in the next round if they beat Auxerre which I doubt.

Celtic for the Cup! The K O format is much better than the league in Europe BTW.

Better them advancing than Celtic. :D I don't know what you're getting so excited about. It's not as though Celtic are going to win the Uefa Cup. In fact, they'd do better crashing out now so they can concentrate on Gers and the SPL.

Stuttgart are flying high in the Bundesliga so i wouldn't advise Celtic fans to be getting too confident.

Celtic 3-1 Stuttgart

Stuttgart were reduced to just 10 men just 16 minutes in when Bordon was sent off for a foul on Petrov. The 10 man Germans then took the lead through Bundesliga hotshot Kevin Kuranyi. But a goal from Paul Lambert and another from Shaun Maloney left it 2-1 to the Celts at HT.
Despite dominating the second half, Celtic had only a Petrov goal to show for all their pressure and a 3-1 advantage after the first leg. This tie is far from over.

VFB Stuttgart 3 - Celtic 2

Celtic almost stuffed the result up. Luckily there was only a few minutes to play when they scored their 3rd

Onto the 'Battle Of Britain' .

Celtic VS Liverpool.

Should be quite a game lads

Stuttgart - Celtic also was a good game too watch. I enjoyed it.

Now indeed Celtic - Liverpool, could very well be the later winner of the UEFA Cup in this match.

Celtic were lucky they got those early goals as they really crumbled after Stuttgart got the goal, just like against Celta. Liverpool V Celtic will be quite a game i expect.:D

To update; Celtic pulled off a stunning 2-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield to progress to the semi finals where they meet Boavista. Lazio and Porto contest the other semi final. The Bhoys dream is looking more and more like reality.:D
