Claudio Lopez has launched an astonishing attack on teammate Hernan Crespo for his poor World Cup showing.

The former Valencia man has hit out at his Lazio colleague following Argentina’s shock first round exit from the 2002 World Cup.

"Crespo didn’t get anything right but now he wants to blame me for the missed chances against Sweden in our final game," he told Argentine TV station Canal 12.

"He was in a poor state of form and I asked him to give more because the side needed his help. But he didn’t bother himself with that and everyone saw the results."

Although Crespo featured in all three games as only a substitute, Lopez continued his attack.

"He said that I missed many opportunities to score but my chances came from the wing while his came in front of goal but he didn’t get anything right.

"It seemed to me that at the end he cried for the television cameras, but I cried because I had worked hard for four years to get to the World Cup Finals."

Argentina crashed out of the Japan and Korea event after beating Nigeria, but they lost to England before only drawing with the Scandinavians.

Lopez’s outburst has increased speculation that the two players will not feature for the same club in the new campaign.

Lopez has been linked with a return to Spain and even Manchester United.

While Crespo was said to be a target for Barcelona and Real Madrid, but the poor economical state of European football may see the former Parma man remain in Rome for at least one more term.

I have to despise what Lopez has said here. These are shocking comments, and what will happen this season if they are together up front? Bielsa is a fool for a start for not starting Crespo, he should have played every match from the start and I can almost put my arse on it that Argentina would have got out of the group.

Claudio Lopez has promised to boost his goal-rate for Lazio if they agree to keep him this summer.

The Argentine is a reported target of Atletico Madrid, but he wants to stay in Italy with the Rome club and is determined to prove himself in Serie A.

"I want to remain at Lazio," he said.

"I know the club will have some offers... I hope I can stay and do well for the squad."

The 27-year-old joined Lazio two years ago but has been a disappointment and has not hit off the deadly partnership with countryman Hernan Crespo that the club had anticipated.

A miserable first season was followed by a better year in terms of goalscoring, with 10 goals his contribution from 29 appearances last term.

But Lopez is determined to step up his scoring rate and told his club's official website: "Last season was a disappointment for all of us and for the club.

"This will be the year of recovery especially for me, I hope to score more goals than last season."
