View Full Version : F.C. Barcelona's World Cup 2002 Diary

I started this thread as a forum for us to discuss the club's players who are in the 2002 World Cup and their subsequent performances (lack their of). As one of the biggest clubs in the world, Barca have a number of players representing them at the tournament. They are:
Rivaldo
Puyol
Xavi
Luis Enrique
Saviola
Bonano
Christanval
I know it's a bit late for this thread, but some of our players have had quite an impact.

Carles Puyol was an absolute LION for Spain. He was IMO their best defender and one of the best I saw all tournament. Unfortunately, he wasn't included in Fifa's WC all-star team. No surprise their as Fifa has proven itself to be a Mickey Mouse organization. Anyway, back to Puyol. He was majestic and I think he could end up being moved to the middle for Spain as a central defender. In the Korea game (which I will be addressing when I have more time :annoyed:  :mad2: ) he along with Joaquin dominated the right side of the field. I'd say that Puyol was our player of the tournament. Barca really need to pay him what he's worth and tie him up to a long term deal. I'd sign him to a 7 year deal and someday he can be a team leader.

Saviola and Christanval both went. Unfortunately neither played. Sergi was injured and so he didn't go.

Saviola wasn't in the Argentine squad. It was the worst mistake Bielsa made.

Well, tough question!
Rivaldo has done okay, and has scored five goals so far, but sometimes i can't see him in the game.
Puyol fights like always and has done a really good job for the spanish NT!!
I also think Luis Enrique was quite good!
Too bad four of them aren't in the startupline...

Big game for Rivaldo on Sunday. I want him to do well, but I want Germany to win.

Why do you want Germany to win? Dont' you like Brazilian football? I love it! And i really hope Brazil wins tomorrow!

I like Brazilian football, but I like Germany better. Not the way they play necessarily, but I'm part German if you look at my family tree. Also, apart from Rivaldo and to a lesser extent Ronaldo, i'm not really a Brazilian fan. I don't hate them like I do Argentina, but I don't like them too much. I think have a tendency to bend the rules more than other teams.

For most of last season we were rumoured to be after Ballack along with Real. Too bad we never landed him. I think he's pure quality and will be a big player in the future. Also, Bayern only paid something like 7 million pounds for him (or he might have been free). Anyway, I didn't want him then but I sure wish we had him now. He's been brilliant for Germany and Bayer Leverkusen.

There's one point were i have to disagree with you Azulgrana. I think that one of the good things in this world cup is that Brazil is back with it's phenomonal soccer! Germany are very good at what they do with their strong organization and disciplined team, but i think the magic is gone when thay play. Even former giant in German soccer, Udo Lattek, has criticised the German team for their boring play.

I prefer Germany to win beacuse I dont want 2 see Brazil with 5 titles.

If Germany win they will have 4 titles, and if they win next time they will have 5. So I'd rather see the brilliant attacks and goals lead Brazil to their fifth title!

But even if Brazil not wins, I'd say that they have been this WC's best team. Not the best organized and disciplined team, but the team who wins and plays the best soccer!

I think you misunderstood me Lasse. I like the country of Germany better, not their style of football necessarily. Also, I think Germany have really done well considering they had a tough qualifying group, a tough play-off opponent in the Ukraine, a pretty tough group at the WC and a # of key injuries to top players like Deissler, Nowotny and Scholl. For me they are the underdog.

The best team at the WC was Sweden :D

It will be nice to see him playing with Mellberg and Allbäck :)
but I think that he deserves a better team than Villa.
