How do I make those sticky posts?

Scroll down to the bottom of a thread and located in the white area you will find a dropdown menu entitled "Admin options: Thread options." Click on that and you can stick/unstick threads. ;)

What is actually the point of stickies?

That they are always at the top of the threads.

Threads that you think are really important can be made stickies so they stay at the top and everyone can see them.
