Zinedine Zidane was dismissed as Juventus were held at home by Spanish champions Deportivo de la Coruna.
The Italians had to wait until the 16th minute to find a way through the visitors tight defence, and when they did Filipo Inzaghi could only watch in agony as his goal-bound effort - which had already beaten Jose Francisco Molina in the Depor goal - hit Nourredine Naybet's left leg before being cleared to safety.
But the Spaniards were more than holding their own, and their Argentinian striker Turu Flores almost snatched the lead in the 28th minute with a cross-shot which sailed just wide.
As the chances flowed thick and fast at both ends, Naybet cleared off the line to again deny Inzaghi five minutes later, before Van der Sar pulled-off a superb diving save to stop Turu Flores from opening the scoring with a 41st minute free-kick from the edge of the area.
But if there was little between the sides in the first-half, Deportivo easily had the better of things after the break.
Van der Sar had to back-peddle to paw a diastrous attempted clearance from Tudor off the goal line in the 53rd minute. And, from the rebound, Fran then saw his effort blocked on the line by a Juve defender.
As the visitors continued to attack, Cesar Sampaio knocked the ball over from just a yard out following fine play by Emerson down the left.
Then, although he failed to make contact, a frustrated Zidane was given his marching orders in the 69th minute for lunging at Emerson.
And Fernando was inches away from securing all three points as Javier Irureta's side finished the contest on top
WHAT I DONT UNDERSTAND IS WHY DID ZIZOU GET SENT OFF FOR LUNGING AT EMRERSON HE HAD NOT CARD BEFORE A RED CARD IS A BIT HARSH IN MY OPINION I MEAN HE DIDNT EVEN TOUCH HIM ACCORDING TO THE MATCH REPORT DID ANY ONE ACTUALLY SEE WHAT HAPPENED ???
