Argentina has confirmed its 23-man squad for the World Cup with players numbered from one to 24 after the No.10 shirt was dropped in honour of Diego Maradona.
Coach Marcelo Biesla handed the 23-man squad to reporters on the deadline set by FIFA.
FIFA authorised the Argentine Football Association to rest the famous shirt in honour of Maradona, the hero of the country’s 1986 campaign.
The 23 players named in the squad, considered one of the favourites to win the World Cup, is the same 23 called up for pre-season training in Rome two weeks ago.
Claudio Caniggia has been confirmed to play in his third World Cup at the age of 35 following appearances in 1990 and ’94 alongside Maradona.
Caniggia had been nursing an injury which he suffered while playing for his club side Rangers in Glasgow. His inclusion ended the slim hopes of Barcelona’s Javier Saviola.
Manchester United’s playmaking midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron will wear the No.11 shirt while Gabriel Batistuta was handed the No.9 shirt.
However, Hernan Crespo is expected to challenge Batistuta for the central striker’s role.
Argentina Squad:
1-German Burgos, 2-Roberto Ayala, 3-Juan Pablo Sorin, 4-Mauricio Pochettino, 5-Matias Almeyda, 6-Walter Samuel, 7-Claudio Lopez, 8-Javier Zanetti, 9-Gabriel Batistuta, 11-Juan Sebastian Veron, 12-Pablo Cavallero, 13-Diego Placente, 14-Diego Simeone, 15-Claudio Husain, 16-Pablo Aimar, 17-Gustavo Lopez, 18-Kily Gonzalez, 19-Hernan Crespo, 20-Marcelo Gallardo, 21-Claudio Caniggia, 22-Jose Chamot, 23-Ariel Oretga, 24-Roberto Bonano.
