Have to check up that Pearl Jam song, always liked them.
Today's choice: "Knives out" by Radiohead

Kazaa is the one I use for now. Audiogalaxy's gone under Metallica-facist control so it's Napster Mk2. If you'd like a website go to oth.net

They're not going to be anywhere remotely near Chicago, it's a strange little tour, mostly East & West coast dates, & some shows Doves are not even the headliners. I'm going to see them here on Friday, I'm sure the next time they're in the States on a proper tour they'll play in the Midwest.

Her looks? What, cause she's not attractive? I'll at least give you that the song is catchy.
I can't confirm it either. I followed the WC til the end. As for the others, I'm not that interested. Then again, i'd say i'm not your typical yank. I'd say your assertion is somewhat true though.

Could be...never been to U.S. myself. But I'm not a big fan of my own country. I mean...well, we have a working society, it's rather safe to walk on the streets and the nature is beautiful, etc...but it can also get boring, people are too distant and grumpy. And damn it's too cold too!
I like that new Pearl Jam tune too, but it's not near their best. I'll choose "Corduroy" (from "Vitalogy" - a fantastic album).

I hear ya about Finland. It's kinda like Wisconsin in that respect, COLD. It doesn't seem as cold these days as when I was a kid though. I need my change of seasons though. I love fall/autumn.
The people in Wisconsin are considered very friendly. When I go visit my mates from High School in San Diego, the people in California (and everywhere else for that matter) are always remarking how nice the people from Wisconsin are. I'm a jack-ass though! :D
I like the new Pearl Jam, but Cordoroy is better. I chose it a ways back. Like I said in that post, I wasn't really into them much back in the day.
I get two again today. "The State We're In" by the Chemical Brothers with guest vocals by Beth Orton. Can you tell i'm a fan of hers? I like the brothers too.
"Sick, Sober and Sorry" by Gene. I doubt if any of you have heard of them other than maybe Roman or the dozzer. They drew a lot of Smiths comparisons when they first came along, but soon fizzled out. I saw em in Chicago once. They had a good number of good tunes.

Well here's one. I saw them live in Finland back in the nineties and have two of their records. The singer has an amazing voice.
Haven't heard their latest stuff though.
The thing about music press (especially in England, I think) is that they bring up these new bands as the next-best-things once a month and when they have nothing else to write, start trashing them in a short time. It's disgusting.
I'll choose from the same band: "For the dead" (their first single?)

You're right about the English press. Otherwise, instead of trashing them they just keep hyping them. I do prefer English bands to American ones though, by a large margin.
Gene's post-second album material wasn't that great IMO. I've tried downloading some of it, but it's tough to find. I remember the English press never really taking to them in the first place though.
I'll go with a fellow Yank today. "Jack-Ass" by Beck. I love the donkey going "eeh aww" at the end.

"America" by Simon & Garfunkel is great. You should blame your parents for letting you listen to Puddle of Mud!
I'm going with the Smiths today. I don't listen to them like I used to, but they're still great. I think I listen to them less because I overplayed them for so long. I can`t overplay a song. More than once I played a song for more than two hours on repeat, if it`s truly a great song, than even after two hours of hearing it I still love it.
(Freaky coincidence that those two Dutch artists are huge fans of Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles)
Whats wrong with Puddle of Mud? Ofcourse not as subtile as S & G but still addictive. Besides, I`m old enough to decide my own playlist. :) I have kind of a wide choice of music. Just no trance and dance and that stuff.
I think I know Girlfriend in a Coma, i`ll download it right now.

Sort of. It's more that the bands I listen to were influenced by the bands before them that I listen to and so on. Well, to an extent. The Smiths are cool though. You should check out more of their stuff. See if you can't download a greatest hits or singles collection. If not, I'll PM you some more of their good stuff. They had a lot of good stuff, more than just a singles collection. However, they also had some mediocre stuff.
I'll go with another one of those bands I didn't really love when they were big. I think they've got a good 10-15 song's worth greatest hits in them. My song for today is "Perfect" by Smashing Pumpkins. BTW, did any of you ever go pumpkin smashing when you were younger? I bet it's just a phenomenon of American suburbia.

It's not an exaggeration to say the Smiths were among the best five bands of the 80's, along with R.E.M., Joy Division, the Replacements, & Fugazi (in my most humble opinion) :) I've listened to Meat is Murder recently so my song would be "I Know It's Over," which can still raise the hair on your neck almost 20 years later.

Not my top 5 of the 80's, but probably some of the most creative and influential. The Smiths are one of my all time favs though, and I didn't really hear them until the early 90's. Morrissey's solo stuff is great too. I guess I'll go with his "Jack the Ripper" as my song of the day today.
"Crash into my arms
I want you
You don't agree
but you don't refuse"
Sinister, yet not too sinister. Morrissey sings it as though Jack the Ripper isn't that bad and that the victims don't mind. Also portrays himself in a metaphoric sense to ole' Jack.

I guess considering that Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980, on the eve of their first American tour. I always associate them with the post-punk eighties, although what the surviving members went on to do as New Order was definitive 80's.

Wow, I'm sure those guys are kicking themselves now for not going, that was a great tour. Did you catch them summer of '01 on the US tour? It was phenomenal, & Beta Band was the opening guest. No, Angie does not go to many shows these days, she's really not into a lot of the indie bands. She would rather see a dj spinning, I think the last "real" show we went to was Basement Jaxx. I was expecting so much more out of that movie. There were some funny bits, but not nearly enough. Gene Hackman was good, but they should have kept going with his "bad" personality for a while. The Wilson brother that was the neighbor was pretty funny too. I loved that Cowboy jacket and hat he was donning all the time.

Alright then, I select "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" by Coldplay. Admittedly I'm not a fan of these guys (too ballady), but I really like this song & "Politik" from their new album, they can rock when they want to!
Sorry to break the Coldplay mould, but today i choose gone Til November by Wyclef. Anyone remember it from about 96 or 97? Great song! (bursts into song, "every time i make a run..")

I'll give with a cover they did today. "You Only Live Twice". Yes, it's the song that was done for the James Bond film. They just covered it. BTW, I have this great record of many of the James Bond songs. Most of them were great tunes too.

That's a challenging one contributed by Joonas, I really don't know much about Big Star other than it was Alex Chilton's early band & I think they were from Memphis. Chilton himself went on to greater reknown, his inluence on later bands trying to recreate his sound is much greater than his fame ever will be though.

Mine today is "Heart of the Sunrise" by Yes. If anyone's seen the film Buffalo '66 this is the song at the beginning. The intro before the vocals come in is awesome, Steve Howe is one of the most under-rated English guitarists of the seventies. I recently bought their retrospective boxed set "In a Word . . . Well he was in Box Tops before Big Star. They had this one hit that is included in all the "best of 70's" collections: "The letter".
I don't know much else about that one.
But Big Star really was a great band: only three records, all of them different and all great. The first one still a rather typical 70's pop-rock album with beautiful melodies, the last one very difficult and disturbing.
Definitely worth checking out.
I like Stereophonics too, but the voice of the singer gets kinda boring when you start listening to whole albums.

I don't know, bands like the Allmans & Little Feat are not really prog rock to me, they're more influenced by the blues & jazz traditions in America, like the Grateful Dead as well. To me prog was almost exclusively English, bands like Yes, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Genesis, etc. Prog was very self-consciously dramatic & orchestrated, the Allmans just jammed (although Pink Floyd was not so much into the image as the songs themselves) But many of the American & English bands from that period shared a mutual affinity for improvisational music, their live performances brought an entirely new dimension to the music. As far as recommendations anything from Pink Floyd from 1970-6 is worth it, Yes "Close to the Edge", EL&P "Brain Salad Surgery" & most of the Genesis albums before Peter Gabriel left the band are interesting. I prefer the the Allman Brothers Band & the GD to most of that prog stuff.

I'll go with CSNY today too. "Helplessy Hoping". The harmonies are great on this one. Another one of those "deep" songs for me.
I'm a huge CSNY fan, those harmonies are standing the test of time! Yes it's a pity they did not stay together longer but I guess each one thought they were big enough to be solo artistes. I've missed a few days so I'll take a couple of selections, the first being "Old Man" by Neil Young.

"Give Me a Microphone" by Little Barrie, not sure if anyone's heard of these guys, they're from Nottingham & probably the best of Britain's "new funk" scene. Although The New Mastersounds are cool as well, at least a few tracks by both bands are available to d-l, I suggest checking them.

I'll go with American stuff today. Well, one band in particular. I don't know how big they are over wherever you lot are, but the Beastie Boys are/were huge in the States. I'll go with two from them for y'all. I'll even go back to my High School days.
"Sabotage" was huge back then. The song and the video were so big here. My friends and I overplayed it. I actually saw them in concert for that tour.
"So What'cha Want" was probably the most popular Beastie's song for my friends and I back then. LOL! I can here on of my dumb friends back then singing it. LOL!!! :D

Of course the B-Boys were always the coolest, pity it's been 4 years now since Adrock, Mike D & MCA have released an album. I really have not listened to them much recently other than the remix singles from Hello Nasty which are very good but probably out-of-print now. These were the last until the label Grand Royal folded & it seems the Beasties are in semi-retirement now. I still remember hearing Licensed to Ill in the record shop in Maidstone when I was like 15, it changed my life! My Beastie Boys songs of the day are "Get It Together" featuring Q-Tip, followed by "Futterman's Rule."

For which film? I think Duran Duran did the title song for "A View to a Kill." Weren't Aha from Sweden? The video for Take on Me was a high point of the 80's ;) Seriously though it is a memorable video, the scenario of going into a comic book was pretty cool.

If you enjoy indi, li-fi pop rock types, you may want to check out a band called Hot Hot Heat (quite possibly the worst band name since Gorky's Zygotic Mynci). The band hails from Victoria, Canada but sound more likely to have been spawned out of the New York underground.
