Well, by my count I get about 8 songs as i've been gone 8 days.
Here goes:

"Trouble" by Coldplay. I noticed as I browsed this thread that someone chose it recently. It's my favourite Coldplay song and one of my fav songs period.

"The Cedar Room" by Doves. My fav Doves song.

"Good Souls" by Starsailor.

"Sing" by Travis. They're still the best Scottish band of all time in case any of you are still unsure. ;) :D Great tune. Great live too cause they use the banjo.

"Concrete Sky" by Beth Orton. I think this one is probably on her new album. It's on our CD at work so I here it quite often.

"Walk On" by U2.

"Rudie Can't Fail" and "The Guns of Brixton" by the Clash. Roman already mentioned my favourite Clash song.

That about rounds it out. Now i'll be back down to one a day. :D

Nirvana wasn't so special. They didn't even "invent" grunge like some people say. If mr. Cobain would have shaved his beard with something more conservative than a shotgun, they wouldn't be near so famous and appreciated today.
Anyway, their best song was a cover, which I choose for today: "The man who sold the world", originally by David Bowie.

Sure, Nirvana did not invent "grunge" music, but to say they weren't special is not really paying attention. Consider their heyday during the absolute rubbish period of late 80's-early 90's music & they stand out even more so.

My song of the day for Monday is "There Goes the Fear" by Doves, who btw are doing a US tour in September. Catch them if you can.

I like the Foo Fighters as well, but I can understand what you are saying as far as Dave Grohl becoming a smiley faced lead singer instead of the heavy-as-lead drummer he was for Nirvana.

Check out ther new Queens of the Stone Age record if you want to hear Grohl's drumming brilliance again, he's the guest musician. This is a very hard album but also very melodic, if you like Mogwai I recommmend it, QOTSA will not disappont.

You're right they didn't invent grunge, the media did. They were just a rock band and viewed themselves that way.

They'd still be famous even if he hadn't committed suicide. They were huge.

I was in High School at the time. I got it the day it came out, but quickly lost interest. I was into the Dead though at the time, so...
I didn't really get into them until later myself.

Speaking of the Dead, they reunited in Milwaukee about a week and a half ago. I get two picks, so I'll make one of em a Dead song. "Sugar Magnolia".

Now for my second pick. It's the 30th (or so) anniversary of the King. I never liked Elvis at first, but now I do. He really was great. I like both fat and skinny Elvis too. Fat pick today. "Suspicious Minds".

The Smiths are one of the most influential bands of the eighties & when I was a teenager in Sevenoaks they were the only band that mattered at the time (mind this was a bleak musical period). I never really cared for the Moz that much either but he was a great lyricist. I always had much more respect for Johnny Marr, of the more under-rated guitarists. I have a few favourites to suggest, "Bigmouth Strikes Again" , "The Headmaster Ritual", & "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore."

The Cohen brothers are among the best filmakers these days, that is a great movie. The song "Man of Constant Sorrow" is a traditional bluegrass number, check out the version Jerry Garcia did with David Grisman & the great guitarist Tony Rice on the so-called "Pizza Tapes" years before O Brother. However what a great soundtrack, it's worth owning without a doubt.

Yeah, i'm gonna download it. Great tunes on that soundtrack. Ole' Jerr was really into bluegrass, so i'm not surprised. I'd love to hear that version. I'll look for it when downloading.

Looney, I will be brief. Pearl Jam was one of the more influential bands on the planet during the 90's. Creed is thinly-veiled Christian rock with a singer imitating Eddie Vedder. Capisci? ;)

The best thing about the album is that it is solid from top to bottom, all the tunes are at least pretty good if not excellent. As overly-hyped the Strokes have been since last summer, they are definitely for real I think.

I don't think it's a mistake to call R.E.M. one of the best American bands, since the boys from Athens were at their height during the mid-80's, a completely horrible time for popular music in general. I agree that Document is a great album, but some of their earlier records like Murmur & Reckoning are even better IMO.

My song of the day is "Brown Paper Bag" by Roni Size & Reprazent. Since doz has been selecting dance tunes & freeze mentioned Massive Attack, I have to mention my affiliations. Roni Size is the the new master of the Bristol scene ;) So much good music has come out of the West country it seems, Bristol saved the UK music scene.

The thing about R.E.M. for me is that were still good after the late 80's to mid 90's period. I think they still keep on churning out good material. They sort of mirrored U2's career to an extent. Just because they aren't as radio friendly or popular as before, doesn't mean they don't still have it. In fact, I think they were as good if not better. See, I have this theory that for me definately applies to most bands. Generally, it's that bands keep getting better until they hit their peak (often times followed by a plateau) before they taper off. This is pretty general and there are exceptions of course (usually being a really great first album), but I think if you asked the musicians/bands themselves they'd agree with me. Anyway, R.E.M.'s albums "Monster", "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" and the one that followed all had some great material. They also were a different R.E.M. that tested the waters of rock music and IMO succeeded in staying afloat.

The Bristol scene really did have some great stuff come out of it. I'd have to say I disagree with your take on it saving the UK music scene. It definately added a different dimension and gave it some cred when it may have been lacking a bit, but saying it saved it is a bit generous. Either way, it really has enhanced what the UK has to offer, that's for sure. For my song of the day I'll stick with the Bristol scene. I'll go with Portishead (a band i've seen twice live BTW) and "Only You". LOL, they sampled the Pink Panther films from the 70's for this one.

Finally, I think it's kinda funny reading this thread and seeing everyone's choices. I think one could determine's everyone's age (or roundabout) based on the songs they've selected thus far.

Maybe it was overstating the influence of Bristol but I had in mind specifically 91-92 when the American scene was exploding again & admist the "grunge" fad Massive Attack released "Protection" which is a landmark record for the 90's. However all the musical talent in Britain did not need to be "saved" by the Bristol scene, I agree. I was just a matter of time.

Admist all of that discussion, I forgot to pick an R.E.M. song. I listened to Life's Rich Pageant today & my song is "Superman" sung by bassist Mike Mills.

Honest mistake there, but there is quite a difference to the two Beths in question ;) Beth Orton is from York or Leeds I think, definitely a Yorkshire lass. But hasn't she done vocals for at least one Massive Attack tune? It was the Chemical Brothers who originally brought her to our attention, but her solo work is remarkable, the 3rd album out recently.

Second song of the day, Beth Orton "Central Reservation" (Then

While i'm tempted to pick a Beth Orton tune again, i'll stick to the task at hand. There's this radio program on NPR (National Public Radio, I listen to it in the car for news and other things as Milwaukee is void of any meaningful radio stations otherwise) called "Fresh Air". On Labor Day they had a show that had John Fogerty of CCR (Creedence Clearwater Revival). For those of you that don't know em, they were around in the late 60's and early 70's and churned out a lot of great music in a short period of time. I call their music swamp rock. The band have this sort of sound along with their lyrics that drum up imaginations of the Deep South. Anyway, i've always loved their music and the interview was interesting. I'll go with "Fortunate Son" by CCR for today. Every time I hear this one I think of Vietnam or just Forrest Gump in a helicopter in Vietnam.

I like Creedence myself, even though their sound is associated with the deep Southern US ("Born on the Bayou") they were actually from the Bay Area.

My song for today is "Alison" by Elvis Costello. Over his 25 year career EC has released some excellent records, but I still like his first one-My Aim is True-the best.

I know they spent a lot of time there in their day (interesting because it was the same time the Dead and Jefferson Airplane were big there), but weren't they originally from the Southeastern quarter of the US??

I'm going with the Doors today. They were on that same radio program as Fogerty. Well, Ray Manzerak was anyway. He was their keyboardist. It was cool cause he was at piano and played his bit in many of the songs explaining how he came up with it and how it fit into the songs. The Doors never had a bassist, so he took on that duty. His left hand played the bass bits of songs while the right did the other keyboard stuff. It was a really interesting interview. He also talked about how he and Jim Morrison met at the beach (they already new one another through school) and decided to form a band. Jim told him they should be the Doors. Ray was like "you mean the Doors of Perception or something?" as that was what the Doors part was for, but Jim was like "No man, just the Doors". Sounded pretty funny.

"Roadhouse Blues" is my song for the day.

"Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the whee el,
Yeah we're goin' to the Roadhouse, gonna have a reall, good time!"

He has one of the best voices ever...you can't mistake it for anyone else's...I haven't heard many of his albums but my favourite song is definitely "She" (also my choice for today)...I have this feeling that older EC-fans don't appreciate it much though...?

The publishing firm I work for has released a biography on CCR called "Bad Moon Rising," that I've not read but I'm sure it's very good ;) Anyway it seems that John & Tom Fogerty were born in El Cerrito in the East Bay of San Francisco. But I think the genius of Creedence was that they sounded like they were from Louisiana, although the Bayou on acid

Belle & Sebastian are still a great band, but I think after Stuart David left they've been inconsistent. My favourite is still the "3..6..9 Seconds of Light" EP which sounds like it was recorded in a barn, only five songs but brilliant stuff.

Song of the day is "Echoes" by Pink Floyd, in fact the entire album of the same name is worth another listen.

Hence my choices before his departure. You're right on about that though. Has he done anything since he left? "3,6,9" was the first thing I ever bought by them. I bought it on vinyl too w/o having heard them. I took to the french titled song right away.

Never really gave Floyd much of a chance. I think i'd like their earliest stuff the best if I did.

Yes, his new band for the past 3 years is Looper. They're very good. Stuart does a lot of spoken word & even rapping style. I saw them open for the Flaming Lips a couple of years ago. The latest album just came out but I've not heard it yet

Song of the day is "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby Stills Nash & Young.

Opps, that previous post was meant to say I don't think it fit into punk-rock, the band rammstein.

BTW, my song of the day is from one of my favourite international (meaning non-US) hiphop acts called 7 notas 7 colores aka 7n7c of Barcelona called "Buah".

By my count, I get 3 today. Sorry, but I was in Chicago for a wedding. I have to check Ticketmaster tonight for the Coldplay date (I think it's this week) and if Doves are going to Chicago. Anyway, here goes:

"I am mine" by Pearl Jam. It's their latest from their forthcoming album. Good tune. It was getting played a lot on Chicago radio statoins. Speaking of which, XRT (93.7 I think) is one of the best stations in the country. Best of old and new rock.
